Shirazi Foundation attended the 7th Annual Capitol Hill Ramadan Eid Luncheon Hosted by Islamic Relief.  Among the many remarks, Congressman Keith Ellison started by addressing fellow members of Congress and experts with a brief introduction into the life of  Prophet Muhammad (S). The congressman highlighted the early supporters of Prophet Muhammad (S) when he began his mission namely his cousin Imam Ali (AS) and Khadija al Kubra (SA) the wife of Prophet Muhammad  (S). The congressman made an analogy between those who had to flee from Mecca to Ethiopia to seek refuge with the Christian king, as a result, this group became refugees.

The Congressman also spoke to attendees on the current involuntary fast placed on the tremendous amount of refugees after the Holy month of Ramadan and one should never forget to feed those less fortunate who suffer from hunger. Many members of Congress stressed the importance attached to ending global hunger through a unified effort and civic engagement.Shirazi Foundation shares similar values and has assisted orphans that have been left without shelter and provided clean drinking water, clothing, and food for those affected by poverty. For the past 50 years, Shirazi Foundation has helped orphans suffering from hunger and assisted in their daily needs.

 

Shirazi Foundation attended an interactive symposium hosted by The Wilson Center, titled What’s Next For Afghanistan- Pakistan Relations?.An expert panel recognized that there has been a shift and a split between the two counties historically on many issues. In terms of the many terrorist groups in the two countries they have the same agenda as ISIS but under a different name. In some cases some of the dismantled terror groups have recently joined in with ISIS for various reasons. Experts also suggested both countries are going through similar circumstances as far as dealing with these radical extremist influences in the region.  Building a bridge for trade between the two countries were placed high on the list of projects to look forward too. Experts suggested that open dialogue is the way forward to countering war in the region. Experts made recommendations that the U.S. policy makers and those who feed policy need to find solutions after many years of finances placed in resolving the issues between the current rivaling countries.

 

Shirazi Foundation attended an interactive conference hosted by the United States Institute of Peace titled Building the Programs That Can Better Build The Peace. The expert panel carefully explored the mythological vigor that takes place in the peace building process. How to comprehensively measure the successes and failures throughout different organizations who participate in peace building, and how do they effectively communicate that message among each other. The panel of experts also briefly put forward many challenges in the area of implementation. The question was asked as to what kind of civic education we in the peace building community are providing and stated that this kind of question plants seeds and can open doors how to measure successes and failures in the near future. Experts communicated that accountability will force organizations to document their actions even when they fail, but that there is not a standard procedure set in place to measure the findings and facts. Every situation in the peace building process is unique between those who are involved and should be viewed on a case by case scenario.

Shirazi Foundation’s outreach manager Mr. Ibrahim Jabbar attended a symposium hosted by YPFP and the Elliott School of International Affairs titled The Argument for NextGen Leadership in National Security with Ambassador John Negroponte . The expert’s intentions were to prepare attendees towards an understanding of the national security landscape. Experts stressed that in order to have a healthy national security there must be a healthy national economy in place. The current global alliances with this administration also play a major role in protecting the country from any national crisis. Experts briefly explained how the Security Council and the role that the United Nations play in the national security process. Experts also suggested that an array of issues all affect National security from global cyber security threats, violent conflicts in the Middle East, combating terrorism and rapid climate change.
